CHAPTER 5 - Sacrificing Life
Ma Tao subconsciously squeezed Yun Rou's hand, causing Yun Rou to cry out in pain. Only then did the other party remembered that his strength has increased, so he relaxed his grip and said:
"There is a zombie next to the electric gate. I'll help you step on it and go in first."
After all, there were few zombies in the yard, and there were at least thirty zombies rushing towards them now, and he couldn't deal with them.
"Okay!"
Yun Rou gritted her teeth and agreed, after all, saving her life was the most important thing now.
The two of them quickly went over and with the help of Ma Tao, Yun Rou stepped on the zombie's head and climbed up the 1.5-meter electric gate.
Yun Rou turned over and landed lightly in the yard. Ma Tao breathed a sigh of relief. He had already put one foot on the zombie's head that was used as a stepping stool with one foot and was about to climb up.
Suddenly feeling pain in his ankle, Ma Tao looked down and saw a zombie with only half of its body left, biting his ankle hard.
"Ugh." Ma Tao let out a cry of pain. The sound and the flowing blood immediately attracted more zombies. Ma Tao was so angry that he directly inserted the door handle into the other party's head and pulled his foot back with force. Unfortunately, a piece of his skin was still torn off and blood flowed profusely, making the zombies who smelled the blood even more excited.
"Brother Tao, climb in quickly!"
Yun Rou urged Ma Tao anxiously. She also saw the other person being bitten by a zombie, but she still had to rely on him to enter the house to hide, so she just pretended that she didn't see it.
Ma Tao knew that he had to stop the bleeding now, otherwise he would attract more zombies along the way. The zombies in the yard had already surrounded him and Yun Rou was still waiting for him to rescue her. He gritted his teeth and endured the pain, climbed over the electric gate, and rushed towards Yun Rou.
Yun Rou relied on her petite and agile figure to constantly dodge the zombies' attacks and bites. She felt that the strength in her body was rapidly draining away, and she felt a little dizzy and could not hold on for much longer.
When Ma Tao saw that Yun Rou was in danger, he immediately picked up the folding chair at the door of the guard room, swung it, and knocked away the zombies surrounding her. Then he immediately went to rescue Yun Rou and cleared a path leading to the building's door before the chair fell apart.
Ma Tao pulled Yun Rou and quickly opened the security door of the building, then blocked the chasing zombies outside.
But this time, the zombies were extremely persistent. Unlike before, they gave up after losing Wu Lianyi's breath. The strong smell of blood at this time made the zombies more and more excited. They began to scratch the security door with their claws. This door was blocking the delicious food.
"Brother Tao, you're injured, what should we do? You need to bandage it as soon as possible."
Yun Rou said in a trembling voice.
"Hiss!"
Ma Tao sucked in a breath of cold air. His face became somewhat ferocious and the blue veins on his forehead also appeared, which was a bit scary.
Yun Rou saw through the torn hem of the men's overalls that the place where Ma Tao was bitten had begun to turn black. This was not a good sign so she immediately said:
"Brother Tao, which floor should we go to? You won't be able to bear it if the blood keeps flowing."
"Go to the sixth floor. Lianyi's rented apartment is Unit 602. The key is under the doormat at her door."
Sweat flowed down Ma Tao's forehead and he gritted his teeth as he spoke.
"Then let's hurry up!"
Yun Rou's eyes flashed. She was sure that Ma Tao would not change in a short time, so she immediately urged him.
Ma Tao endured the pain and climbed the stairs in front, protecting Yun Rou behind him. When the two of them reached the fifth floor, they saw two zombies wandering in the stairwell. Ma Tao scanned the mutated faces of the two zombies and discovered that these two people seemed to be Wu Lianyi's neighbours.
The two of them had to get rid of these two zombies if they wanted to go up to the sixth floor. Otherwise, they would not be able to go up in such a narrow stairwell. Because of the smell of blood, the two zombies had already turned around and rushed towards the two of them. Because they don't know how to go down the stairs, the two zombies rolled down directly.
Ma Tao gritted his teeth and held the deformed folding chair with only the chair frame left. He hit Wang Qiang, who rolled down first with his head tilted, and sent him away completely after a bloody blur.
Next came Wang Qiang's partner who had disheveled hair and face covered with blood. She screamed and moved towards Yun Rou who was dodging. Ma Tao stomped on her head and it exploded, and the corridor instantly became quiet.
The people who were peeking behind the peepholes were frightened by Ma Tao's ferocity and did not dare to make a sound for fear that the other party would attack them.
Yun Rou looked at Ma Tao's trembling body. A dark light flashed in her eyes then she stepped forward, supported him and whispered:
"Brother Tao, let's go up quickly and don't attract other people's attention."
Ma Tao felt that his mind was a little confused, so he could only nod numbly, then mechanically went upstairs until they finally arrived to the door of Unit 602.
Yun Rou followed Ma Tao's instructions and went to look for the key under the doormat. Unfortunately, she turned over the entire mat but no key was found.
"Brother Tao, there is no key!"
Yun Rou bit her lip and spoke.
Ma Tao also saw it. At this time, his eyes were already a little dazed. He limped forward, pulled hard and opened the security door, then gently pushed the old wooden door, and the door opened smoothly. However, he also fell to the ground and lost consciousness.
The look of panic on Yun Rou's face disappeared at this time. She rubbed her forehead and felt a little dizzy. She knew this was not a good sign. Looking at Ma Tao lying at the door, her eyes flashed. She did not go inside right away but dragged the other person out of the door.
She then pulled out the deformed folding chair from the other person's hand and smashed it hard into the his head while gritting her teeth. Anyway, the person had been bitten by someone who failed to evolve and would turn into a zombie sooner or later so it would be better for her to get rid of him now.
The dull, banging sound echoed in the corridor. Wu Lianyi had fallen into a deep sleep and knew nothing, otherwise she would know how Ma Tao died: beaten to death by the dodder flower he was protecting.
After the sound stopped, Yun Rou held on to the handrail of the stairs, gasping for breath. She felt her dizziness getting worse and she wished she could fall asleep in the next breath.
Yun Rou bit the tip of her tongue to keep herself awake, then dragged Ma Tao's body, threw it into the stairwell, and then rushed back into Room 602 with the last bit of her strength.
After pulling the security door and closing the wooden door, Yun Rou slowly slid down while leaning against the door panel. She was no longer able to exert any strength. Her eyelids felt as heavy as a thousand pounds and she slowly closed them. At the last moment before closing, she realized that the entire unit was an empty room with nothing in it.
"B*stard."
The remaining curses were completely silenced as Yun Rou fainted and fell on the ground.
Before the sun rose on the second day, another wave of people began to feel dizzy and feverish, starting the second round of evolution.
But at that time, no one knew and they thought that these fainted and unconscious people would eventually turn into man-eating monsters when they woke up. Some cruel people directly pushed the unconscious people out of the room while others were unwilling to give up on their loved ones, and in order to prevent accidents from happening, they were locked up alone. For a while, all kinds of things happened in the world.
