CHAPTER 22 - Deep Instinct

The 100-kilometer journey would have only taken 2 hours to reach before the apocalypse. But now, in addition to the zombies that appear from time to time, there are also vehicles lying in all directions on the road, and people who suddenly appear to stop cars and ask for help.

There are basically no residents or tall buildings around the military airport which can be regarded as a flatland. If they are surrounded by zombies, there is no place to retreat, which undoubtedly increases the difficulty of their mission.

This time, all twelve members of the Black Eagle Squad participated in the mission. Ying Yi was the captain, and the captain of the second team, Ying Ao, was the vice captain. Together with five ability-users, a group of seventeen people left the base at sunrise and set off towards the mission target.

The journey was not very peaceful, and they had already gotten rid of two large groups of zombies. As they approached the military airport, the zombie groups disappeared and they only encountered occasional zombies which they easily dealt with. Crystal cores are now valuable things.

After that, everyone took turns to rest and eat, and then the three cars began to accelerate to their destination. They had to arrive there before the sun set and they needed to stay at the military airport for one night.

Wu Lianyi was eating the rice balls she made. The rice balls were not made of pure rice but were filled with braised meat, eggs, sausages, mushrooms and other nutritious and filling things. After finishing five rice balls as big as an adult's fist, she closed her eyes and rested.

Three months after the apocalypse, there was already a clear gap between people with abilities and ordinary people. Take her as an example. As her ability improves, her appetite also increases, and the speed at which she absorbs the energy in a Level 1 crystal core is getting faster and faster. Moreover, the Level 1 crystal core can no longer meet her needs for advancement.

Although ordinary people do not have special abilities, their strength is obviously greater than before the apocalypse, and their five senses have also improved to a certain extent. This is also evolution. Now, ordinary people have no problem killing Level 0 zombies. Even if they encounter a Level 1 zombie, if they cooperate properly, they can also kill it.

"Everyone, get ready. We are 2 kilometers away from the airport."

Ying Yi's voice came from the car radio.

Wu Lianyi opened her eyes and checked her equipment, making sure there was no problem. She jumped out of the vehicle as soon as it stopped and stabilized.

An unmanned reconnaissance aircraft was released to have a bird's eye view of the entire airport and determine the mission target.

There were no planes on the takeoff runway. The plane should be in the hangar, but there were zombies moving aimlessly in the airport. Because of the appearance of the drone, they all raised their heads and looked up at the sky with their empty eye sockets.

In the northwest corner, there are two separate two-story buildings, which are the airport's offices and dormitories, and in the southeast corner is a large warehouse. The ammunition they are looking for should be in the logistics warehouse.

After everyone understood the current situation, Ying Yi began to assign tasks. Ying Ao led the second team and the space ability-user to search for ammunition in the warehouse. The remaining people were responsible for killing wandering zombies, clearing the runway, and ensuring that the fighter planes take off smoothly.

However, Wu Lianyi was not optimistic about flying the fighter plane away. With the appearance of zombie animals, there would also be zombie birds in the sky. Once they encountered each other, the plane would definitely be destroyed and everyone would be killed.

"Zombie animals have appeared. Have you considered zombie birds?"

"According to convention, birds are not allowed around the airport, and the airport will be cleaned up regularly. However, since it has not been cleaned up in the last three months since the start of the apocalypse, the situation that Purple Eagle mentioned may occur. Everyone should be more alert when the time comes."

Ying Yi said directly, and everyone nodded immediately.

"Move!"

The two teams entered the airport in a tactical formation, one on the left and one on the right, and began to act separately.

The Eagle Wing team acted very quickly. Within an hour, they had killed all the zombies wandering around the airport, mainly the airport personnel on duty, but the number of people was a little off.

"Captain, the number is wrong. The information said that there are 300 people stationed here, but the total number of zombies we killed is less than 100."

The team member reported in a low voice.

“Go check the office building and dormitory.”

The team quickly moved to the northwest corner. When they got closer, they saw zombies snarling inside through the window. They were locked up on the second floor.

"Prepare to fight!"

The group of people entered from the first floor and cleared one room after another. After entering the second floor, the gunfire intensified. Wu Lianyi fell to the end, responsible for the rear, while scanning the surroundings from time to time.

There were ten rooms on the second floor, and almost every room contained ten to fifteen zombies. After an hour of cleaning up these zombies, Ying Yi found a pilot who had turned into a zombie in the innermost monitoring room, huddled in the corner as if dead.

Everyone looked at the other party's blackened calves and fell into silence. It was obvious that the other party had brought and locked up these zombies into the office building but he himself was also scratched and mutated, and now he has turned into a zombie.

The other party seemed to have heard the noise, and slowly opened his eyes. His eyeballs are already gone, and a "wheezing" sound came from his throat, but he still did not attack Ying Yi and the others who were close at hand.

A suffocating silence spread among the Black Eagle team. Wu Lianyi sighed, walked directly from the back of the team to the room, and said:

"You go to the dormitory building at the back to check. I'll handle this."

"You..."

"I'll send him off."

Ying Yi finally waved his hand and exited the second floor with his teammates and the ability-users.

Wu Lianyi was very straightforward and swung down her sword to set the other party free. Then a crystal core rolled to her feet. This crystal core was larger than the Level 1 crystal core.

Obviously, this zombie is a Level 2 zombie. The zombies in the rooms should've been controlled by him and locked in the room. The purpose was to prevent these zombies from going out to harm others. This might be the instinct engraved in the other party's bones.

After Wu Lianyi put away the crystal core, she left the room and went straight to the dormitory building. The situation there was similar to that of the office building. Because the Level 2 zombie was killed and there were no other high-level zombies that could suppress them, the zombies began to pounce on the Black Eagle team members.

A battle broke out, and half an hour later, the entire dormitory building was emptied, but everyone was in a low mood.

"Captain Ying Yi, our operation is going smoothly and we have obtained the ammunition. We'll go over and join you now."

"Copy that! Come directly to the dormitory building, it has been cleared."

Ying Yi replied in a deep voice.

Half an hour later, the second team successfully joined them. The two captains exchanged a few words and decided to stay here overnight and leave early the next morning.

But when Wu Lianyi looked at the sky outside, her brows furrowed.

The setting sun seemed to have a hint of blood, which gave her a very bad feeling, especially the blowing wind, which carried a trace of moisture, indicating that it would rain tomorrow.

Wu Lianyi recalled what she had seen from the God's perspective and went directly to see Ying Yi.

"Captain, I have a very bad feeling. Either return to the base overnight, or be prepared to be trapped."
